Chapter 7
We Must Protect Our Language, Borders, and Culture
A country is defined by its language, border, and culture, and a country without a recognized and respected border is not really a country at all. Conservative talk show host Michael Savage has been preaching this theme for many years. A country's border sets a boundary for all people to acknowledge and respect. A country that does not enforce and defend its own borders is guilty of letting outsiders determine its destiny.
Furthermore, a family is a microcosm of a country. An open border policy would be like letting people, whether you know them or not, come and go in and out of your house as they please, anytime they want. This type of policy does not respect your family's personal space, privacy, or boundaries. In addition, your personal safety and private property could be in danger. What if one of the people going in and out of your home as they please, is a child molester? You have an obligation to your family to not let this happen. Our country has an obligation to its citizens to protect them at all costs. Without this protection, we have no country.
Illegal Immigrants Are Stressing Our Prison System
An open border policy for a country is not all that different. Our national security is threatened, not to mention our economic security, when our borders are not secure. Crime has skyrocketed because of illegal immigration, and our prisons (State and Federal) are struggling to cope with this problem. According to the New York Times in 2007, Lou Dobbs of CNN reported that one third of the people in our Federal prisons come from another country. If illegal immigrants can cross our border, then so can terrorists; undoubtedly, many have. I do not know anyone who is against legal immigration, but I know many people who are outraged at illegal immigration, and rightly so.
Many Progressives and Democrats call for open borders because they want disadvantaged people to have an opportunity to succeed and become Democrat voters. While admirable, this line of thinking is foolish because we simply cannot take the whole world into this country. Illegal immigration from Mexico has stressed our hospitals, taken jobs from Americans, depleted our economic system, and contributed to Mexican gang violence and increased crime. Try to enter Mexico illegally and see what happens. They will arrest you and throw away the key.
From 1924 to 1965 there was virtually no legal immigration into the United States, as discussed in Chapter 3. In part, this was done to assimilate all the immigrants that came in the late 1800's and early 1900's into American culture. There was illegal immigration then, but not in the numbers there are today. We are the only country in the world today (that I know of) that allows our borders to be so easily crossed.
Each country is responsible for the protection of its own people. So that we can do this, I would propose a freeze on all immigration until a new system is in place to control our borders.
